Begin assignments with background reading
Ten priorities for proficient academic writing
The parts of ten

The step that immediately follows assignment analysis is researching background information on the topic. Get yourself acclimated with the language of the topic, issues, implications, events, experts, locations, timeframes, and so forth. Take notes identifying highlights as you read. Identify supporting information for source engagement.

Read for answers to questions such as, “Who are the experts in the field?” “What publications do they write for?” “What issues are current and ongoing?” “What are the implications of the topic economically, culturally, and politically?” Information answering these questions provides launching points for determining assignment approaches. Information answering these questions could also provide sources for documentation. Preliminary reading will also provide information that generally follows the introduction in many writing assignments.
