Ten strategies for creative source engagement
The parts of ten

Primary sources are the reliable evidence of support and source engagement. Chapter 11 identifies examples of primary sources: eyewitness accounts, original studies, artwork, photos, diaries, and artifacts. In the following example paragraph, the interaction and engagement of primary sources describe a two-century-old lifestyle:

· The diary entry of a town elder explained that “procurement of food” was the “business of the day.” What could not be grown was bartered for with people from nearby towns. Early photographs showed a “raised stage” in the town square where people from neighboring towns brought their food and goods for barter. A nearby museum displays an artifact of a food container that was excavated from the town square site. The museum also contains original artwork showing a town square theme that could be described today as a farmers’ market.
