What can I do with a ...?
English conversation games and activities for all levels

Skills: Speaking/Listening

Time: 5-10 minutes

Level: Beginner to Advanced

Materials Required: An object (something from your office or teacher's room)

Show students some random common object (potatoes are often used for this activity, but I like to use some kind of “trash” to introduce a lesson on recycling.) Have students work as a class or in small groups to brainstorm as many possible uses for the item as possible. This is a fun way to get some creative juices flowing. Of course, students should do this in English!

Set a time limit (3-5 minutes) and then discuss the answers. If some answers seem too outlandish, have the student or group explain how or why they would use the item in that way.

Procedure:

1. In advance, prepare an object. A potato is commonly used, but it can be anything.

2. Divide students into groups of 3-5.

3. Give them 3-5 minutes to brainstorm creative uses for the object.

4. As a class, briefly discuss their various ideas.

5. Have the class choose the best idea if you like.
