Avoid ambiguous or remote pronoun reference
Make pronoun references clear
Grammar

Pronouns substitute for nouns; they are a kind of shorthand. In the sentence When Andrew returned home, he took a nap, the noun Andrew is the antecedent of the pronoun he. A pronoun should refer clearly to its antecedent.

23a Avoid ambiguous or remote pronoun reference.

Ambiguous pronoun reference occurs when a pronoun could refer to two possible antecedents.

Remote pronoun reference occurs when a pronoun is too far away from its antecedent for easy reading.
