Extension
More words - grammar
✵ When we talk about grammar, we talk about the rules of a language; when we talk about vocabulary, we talk about the words in a language.
✵ Word order is which comes first, second, third... For example: An old man (word order ✓) old man-an (word order X)
Language of instruction
✵ A question asks you something (What’s your name?).
✵ An answer gives a reply to a question (My name is Martin).
✵ An exercise is a group of questions.
✵ To mark your answers is to check which ones are correct (*X) and which are wrong (X).
There are many types of exercises in this book:
Listening
✵ There are also two cassettes or CDs with this book.
✵ When you listen, don’t say anything! What can you hear?
✵ When you repeat, listen first, then say what is on the recording.
✵ Each listening exercise will have a recording number so you know where you are (for example, Unit 1, recording 1.1).
✵ A transcript is a written copy of the words you hear on listening.
In the classroom
✵ Work you do in class is called classwork; extra work you do at home is called homework.
✵ If you check your homework, you see how good it is, how many answers are correct.
✵ A class will usually have one teacher and many students.
✵ To help explain things to a class, many teachers will write on a whiteboard or a blackboard.
✵ If a teacher asks you to work on your own, then you work alone, without anyone to help.
✵ Teachers also often ask their students to work in pairs, two students together; if three or more students work together, we call this working in a group.
