Types of drinks

Hot drinks

✵ You can drink your tea and coffee with milk or cream; we call this a white coffee or tea; without milk or cream we call it black.

✵ Some people drink tea with lemon and no milk.

✵ Some people like to have sugar.

Note: Some people also like to drink hot milk.

Cold drinks

✵ A drink can be [fizzy/carbonated] (like Coca-Cola) or still (like orange juice).

✵ Drinks without alcohol are called soft drinks.

✵ [Fizzy drinks/sodas]: tonic, Coca-Cola.

Note: In Britain lemonade is a [fizzy/carbonated] drink but in the US it is still (not [fizzy/carbonated]).

✵ Fruit juices: pineapple juice, grapefruit juice, apple juice.

✵ People often put ice in cold drinks to make them cooler.

Note: Some people also like to drink iced coffee or tea.

Alcoholic drinks

✵ We can have red, white or rose wine.

✵ Beer: in Britain people drink bitter or lager; bitter is a darker beer than lager. It’s all called beer in America.

✵ Spirits are drinks such as [whisky/whiskey], brandy, vodka, gin.

Amounts

✵ We have a glass of fruit juice or lemonade or wine but a cup of tea/coffee.

✵ You can also have a pot of tea or coffee (a pot has a few cups of tea or coffee in it).

✵ In Britain you can buy a pint of beer or half a pint; in Europe you can buy a [litre/liter], or half a [litre/liter] of beer.

✵ You can also buy wine and beer in bottles.

Places to drink

✵ You can have a drink with a meal in a restaurant.

✵ A [cafe/coffee shop] is a place that sells lighter food as well as hot and cold drinks, but not normally alcoholic drinks.

✵ A [pub/bar] sells alcoholic drinks as well as soft drinks.

✵ A bar is another place to buy alcoholic drinks; this is often part of another building, for example part of a hotel. In the US it is the name for a pub.

Questions and sentences

✵ If you’re thirsty, it means you want a drink; you can ask if someone is thirsty.

I’m thirsty.

Are you thirsty;' Yes, I am./No, I’m not.

✵ If you ask for a drink, you can say I’d like a/two/three... + drink(s).

✵ You can also say Could I have...?

I’d like a coffee, please.         Could I have a coffee, please?

I’d like two lemonades and an orange juice, please?    Could I have two lemonades and an orange juice, please. lemonades and

✵ You can ask what someone wants using: What would you like? What would you like? I’d like a coffee, please.

✵ You can say What would you like? in a [shop/store] or in a house. If you are offering someone a drink in your house, you can also say What can I get you? or Would you like...?

What can I get you? A glass of water, please.

Would you like a drink? Yes, please. An orange juice.

Would you like some tea? No, thanks.

✵ You can give a choice using Would you like/prefer... or...?

Would you prefer tea or coffee? Coffee, please.

Would you like black coffee or coffee with cream? With cream, please.

Sonny Jim’s full strength lager, brewed locally. Sonny Jim has been brewing since 1973, producing a range of lagers and bitters that are without equal. And this is our king of lagers, the strongest drink we make! Drink it ice cold in our special Sonny Jim’s pint glass!

47 Count Black’s Cold T

Hot? Need a drink that will attack your thirst quickly? Count Black first made his Cold T for the drinkers of London back in the 1600s, and Sonny Jim’s is proud to be bringing that recipe back for the drinkers of today. Made from a mix of Indian and Chinese leaves, Count Black’s Cold T must be drunk cold. Sounds awful? Don’t knock it till you try it (we think you’ll love it!) Whatever you do, don’t add milk!
