Misspelled and misused words

E.G. VERSUS I.E.

The meanings of these two Latin abbreviations are commonly reversed. Unless you’re learning to speak the dead language Latin, when you see these abbreviations, substitute the English equivalent and there’ll be no confusion.

e.g. (stands for the Latin phrase exempli gratia, meaning for example)

He takes far too many supplements, e.g., vitamins, iron, calcium, beta-carotene, sleep-aid tablets, and diuretics.

i.e. (stands for the Latin phrase id est, meaning that is)

He believes in reincarnation, i.e., a second life possibly as a tree.

Reminder: Both phrases require a comma before and after them.

Memory tip

Both e.g. and example begin with the letter e.
