So how fast is “lightning speed,” and are you sure you’ve got it yet?

Lightning speed is a metaphor. It’s not just a metaphor for “quick.” Underneath that is a much larger metaphor.

Lightning speed is the speed of thought.

Your mind races at a blazing speed. Formulating ideas. Rejecting ideas. Connecting the dots. Controlling the workload. Working on puzzles from years ago.

Writing FAST is writing as close to the speed of thought as you can reach. Your speed. Of your thought.

And then reaching the reader — at her speed of thought.

The faster you write, the less you’ll get in your own way. Stray ideas and distractions can’t stop you, because you’re directly in tune with your thought process.

The FAST System connects you with your own mind.

It lets you harness your mind. It lets you put what’s in your mind directly onto the page.

And from the page, you touch the mind of your reader.

Ideas sparking ideas.

That is what writing at lightning speed is all about.
