Exercise 1. Clauses of condition introduced by IF. Rewrite the sen­tences below using an if-clause to show contemporary unreality. Follow the example.

Example:

Mr. Evans is here. We can begin.

If Mr. Evans were here, we could begin.

1. It isn’t raining. We can go.

2. He knows the answer. He will tell you.

3. My brother is here. He knows what to do about it.

4. The dog is well trained. It comes when you call.

5. Everyone is good and kind. We don’t need any policemen.

6. There is some truth to the rumor. There is a story in the evening paper.

7. He is a good player. He will win the match.

8. I can find a pretty dress. I buy it right away.

9. The student uses the tape recorder more often. He will improve his accent.

10. There is an opening. You are the first to be told about it.

Exercise 2. Clauses of comparison; proportionate change. Use the with comparatives to indicate proportionate change. Follow the example below.

Example: (long) We waited. We became impatient.

The longer we waited, the more impatient we became.

(hard) 1. It rained. He drove fast.

(slow) 2. He walked. I became exasperated.

(soon) 3. He comes. We can go home soon.

(early) 4. The meeting ends. They can go home early.

(high) 5. They climb. They can fall far.

(late) 6. He worked. He became depressed.

(long) 7. I listened to her story. I became sympathetic.

(fast) 8. I wrote. My writing became illegible.

(hard) 9. It snowed. The cars moved slowly.

(loud) 10. I called. My voice got hoarse.

Exercise 3. Clauses with UNLESS. Change the if-clauses in the sen­tences below to unless-clauses. Follow the example.

Example: He will be here by 8 o’clock if he doesn’t have car trouble on the way.

He will be here by 8 o’clock unless he has car trouble on the way.

1. He’ll lose his hearing if the operation isn’t successful.

2. You’ll get a headache if you don’t wear your glasses.

3. We’ll go for a drive in the country if it doesn’t rain.

4. I’ll come to your party if I don’t have to work.

5. He ought to graduate in June if he doesn’t fail his exams.

6. He is coming on the 15th if there is no change of plan.

7. The trip to town takes half an hour if there is no traffic delay.

8. He can’t afford to go to college if he doesn’t win a scholarship.

9. That play isn’t worth seeing if the star is not appearing in it.

10. He will get in serious trouble if he doesn’t behave better.

11. The school should be finished next year if there is no strike of the construction workers.

12. The bill will become law if the President doesn’t veto it.

13. There will be a serious water shortage if we don’t get rain soon.

14. She hopes to buy that painting if her husband doesn’t object.
