Transitive verbs with direct objects
Sound symbols

Another important type of complement is the direct object, a noun (or noun construction) that follows a verb and “receives” the action of the verb: I see the man, I hear the song, They finished the work. If the direct object is the same person or thing as the subject, the object must be one of the reflexive pronouns (I see myself in the mirror). Pronoun objects are always in the objective case: me, him, us, etc.

The dog bit John.   Do you like it?

They speak English.   Do they see us?

The children like ice cream.
