There are many combinations of verbs with function words that act as meaningful units in the language and resemble the separable two- word verbs, except that the two parts are never separated by the presence of a direct object between them.

Here are some representative inseparable combinations with their meanings.

call for   require (as a law, recipe, etc.)

call on   visit

care for   tend, guard, supervise

come across find accidentally

count on  rely on

get around  evade, avoid

get in   enter

get on   board, enter

get off   leave, descend from

get over  recover from (a disease, injury, etc.)

go over   review

go with   harmonize, look good together; accompany someone of the opposite sex regularly in public, as in courtship

hear from  receive a communication from

hear of   learn about

hit on   discover accidentally

look after  take care of

look at   regard, direct one’s gaze toward

look for   seek

look into  investigate

run across  find or meet accidentally

stand for  endure, permit

wait on   serve (as in a restaurant)
