Chapter 15 - Gerunds in noun compounds

There are many combinations of ing-form and following noun in which the ing-form is not a present participle but a gerund, and the resulting combination is a compound, always stressed on the first word. Notice the difference in these expressions:
a hunting dog (a dog that is hunting)
a hunting dog (a dog for hunting)
a dancing girl (a girl who is dancing)
a dancing girl (a girl whose profession is dancing)
Some other compounds consisting of gerund and noun:
swimming pool grinding tool sitting room
carving knife punching bag polishing cloth
sewing machine boxing ring shaving brush
cooking pot dining room knitting needle
Each of the foregoing compounds is always stressed on the first word.
