Section Four — Poetry

Poetry essays can be difficult to get the hang of. There are a few practice exam questions at the end of this section for you to have a go at, but first here's an essay question shown with a sample answer, and a few helpful hints to keep in mind for your own answers. It's worth taking the time to read through the whole thing.

1. ’Havisham’ by Carol Ann Duffy is a poem where strong dislike for another person is shown. What is the reason for dislike in the poem and how does the poet convey this dislike?

Essay plan:

1) Introduction - include first part of the question, give some background to the poem and explain who is disliked. Use the language of the question.

2) Main body - look closely at language and analyse HO W the poet conveys dislike. Remember to quote to support the points. Find some quotes that show dislike and use them to structure the essay. Make a solid point for each quote.

3) Language and structure - use technical vocabulary and show how and why it is being used by the poet. Refer back to the question to ensure that the essay stays focused.

4) Sum up key points in short, concise conclusion.
