It is important to examine the proofs of the illustrations carefully. In the era when authors submitted photographic prints and other hard-copy illustrations, one needed to check carefully for quality of reproduction. Now that illustrations are being submitted electronically, such a need has diminished. Nevertheless, checking illustrations remains important. Make sure that all illustrations are present, complete, and appropriately placed. Also, make sure that electronic gremlins have not somehow disturbed or distorted the illustrations. If you perceive problems with the illustrations, report them as instructed by the journal.
