Paper structure and purpose

First, we would like to congratulate you. If you are reading this chapter, it is because you have decided to further understand the craft of scientific writing by venturing online. We have spent many years exploring the rich humus of the Internet garden and collected many sites worthy of your attention. Do not be surprised if some of the resources seem a little dated — while the engineering and biological sciences advance in leaps and bounds, the science of writing is decidedly more turtle-like. Yet it contains a richness of understanding that benefits modern readers and writers, as it no doubt will for future authors as well. All URLs have been tested at the time of publication. They may change over time but you will always find an up-to-date list on the book site: https://www.scientific-writing.com/the-bonus-page.

Once you have been published, and invited to present your paper at a conference, you will need a new set of skills. Our scientific presentation blog (scientific-presentations.com) will be of great use to you. So will the book we wrote “When the Scientist Presents — An Audio and Video Guide to Science Talks”. You will find its page on the publisher’s site: https://www.worldscientific.com/worldscibooks/10.1142/7198

After you have published a few papers, you may wish to capitalize on them and start to write grants, and here also we can be of help. We have written the book “The Grant Writing and Crowdfunding Guide for Young Investigators in Science” which you will find on the publisher’s site: https://www.worldscientific.com/worldscibooks/10.1142/10526. Further help on grant writing is also on our blog (www.thesciencegrant.com). Finally, earlier in this book we’ve made references to (add even quoted from) Jean-Luc’s latest book; a book on writing techniques specifically ccentered on the reader. That book, “THINK READER” goes further into some of the chapters presented in this book. It can be accessed here: https://www.amazon.com/THINK-READER-Writing-Reader-based-techniques/dp/173389750X.
