Scoring the CBEST essays
The writing section

To achieve a top score on your essays, your written responses should cover all parts of the question prompt and address the following.

Each essay is scored by two readers. Essays are scored holistically, and each reader assigns a score of 1 to 4 for each essay based on the CBEST rubric or scoring guide on pp. 31—32. This means that the readers look at the overall quality of the work.

1.  4 = pass

2.  3 = marginal pass

3.  2 = marginal fail

4.  1 = fail

The final score for the writing section is based on a combination of four scores (two scores from each reader). Since each essay is scored by two readers, 12 is a passing raw score.
