Getting started: Five steps to success on the CBEST
Introduction to the CBEST: California basic educational skills test

1. Awareness. Become familiar with the test—the test format, test directions, test material, and scoring. Visit the CBEST website at www.ctcexams.nesinc.com.

2. Basic Skills. Review the basic abilities required on the test in reading, writing, and mathematics. Know what to expect on the exam. You’ll find this information in the “Skills and Concepts Tested” sections in chapters 1—3. Know what to expect on the exam. This will help you determine your strengths and weaknesses so that you can develop a study plan unique to your individual needs.

3. Question Types. Become familiar with the question types of each area of the test as detailed in chapters 1−3.

4. Strategies and Techniques. Practice using the strategies outlined in the next section of this book to determine which ones work best for you. Remember, if it takes you longer to recall a strategy than to solve the problem, it’s probably not a good strategy for you to adopt.
