Algebra is a key branch of mathematics that uses the basic building blocks of the four operations of arithmetic:x addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Although the exam does not emphasize algebra, this chapter introduces basic algebraic topics that you will need to know. For the CBEST, you will need to be able to:

· Set up simple equations.

· Solve equations with one variable.

· Recognize different methods of solving a problem.

· Identify important facts in a problem.

Use the following table to chart your progress as you review each topic. Check off topics as you study the material. Focus your attention on one math topic at a time, and assess your strengths to evaluate areas in which you feel you may need improvement.
