Statistics and probability diagnostic test
Statistics and probability review

Statistics and probability questions appear in a unique format compared to other math questions on the CBEST. Many of these types of questions require some basic knowledge of interpreting graphic displays as you draw on your ability to reason and make inferences. A solid understanding of the arithmetic concepts (fractions, proportion, and graph interpretation) covered in chapters 4 and 7 will help you answer these types of questions.

As you work through this chapter, use the following chart to keep track of the topics to study. Focus your attention on one topic at a time, and assess your strengths to evaluate areas in which you feel you may need improvement.

Statistics and Probability Diagnostic Test

Directions: Solve each problem in this section by using the information given and your own mathematical calculations.

1. Find the mean of 27, 30, 28, 22, 25, and 28.

2. Find the median of 63, 80, 85, 74, 71, 83, 53, and 82.

3. Find the mode of 18, 19, 13, 17, 18, 16, and 20.

4. A student has test scores of 83, 95, 91, 86, and 92. What score is needed on the sixth test for the student to have an average of 90?

5. If a student receives a percentile score of 45% on a test, what does that mean?

6. In a single throw of two dice, determine the probability that they will total 6.

7. If a coin is tossed four times, what is the probability that all four tosses will be tails?

8. A box contains all 26 letters of the alphabet. What is the probability that the first two letters drawn will be the letters a, b, c, d, e, or f ?

9. One bag contains 5 white marbles and 4 black marbles. A second bag contains 4 white marbles and 5 black marbles. If one marble is drawn from each bag, what is the probability that both marbles will be black?

10. If one card is drawn at random from a deck of 52 cards, what is the probability that the card will not be a spade?
