Developing good reading skills may be the most important part of your preparation. Effective reading skills will help you increase your speed and comprehension on all sections of the CBEST—even the word problems in the mathematics section. Successful readers use a variety of strategies: note-taking, identifying the main ideas, predicting, summarizing, and drawing conclusions. If you do not read regularly, it is important to learn some of these reading strategies and be patient with yourself as you work through the material presented in this chapter. Keep in mind that reading competency naturally improves with time and practice.
