Playing by the rules: specifics for formatting periodicals
Formatting last impressions: reference list
Practicing safe cites: writing and citing sources

You have your go-to snacks, your go-to comfort foods, your go-to music — and in this section your go-to reference choice: periodicals and scholarly journals.

Periodicals are so common to academic research at all levels that your professors may question not seeing one. Here’s a look at guidelines that are exclusively for periodical entries in reference lists:

· Capitalize periodical titles in title case. Review the section, “Clarifying Elements: Reference Conventions and Abbreviations,” earlier in this chapter.

· Enter the periodical title exactly as it appears in the publication.

· Italicize the title, followed by a non-italicized comma.

· Italicize the volume number.

· Enter the issue number (if available) in parentheses immediately following the volume number, without a space, and follow the issue number with a comma: 8(4),

· Follow the issue number with a space and the page range. Follow page ranges with a period: 56—84.

· If volume numbers and issue numbers are unavailable, you can obviously exclude them from the entry.

· End with a DOI or URL if available and applicable. Do not follow a DOI or URL with a period.

Refer to Chapter 11 for more on specific titles of journals and periodicals.

Here’s a template of what a journal article in a reference list looks like:

The following guidelines walk you through how to format this journal article:

· Names of two authors are separated by an ampersand (&), and the ampersand is preceded by a comma. The date of publication follows the authors’ names.

· The title of the article is written in sentence case (not italicized) and followed by a period.

· The volume number (15) is written in italics.

· The issue number (5) in parentheses follows the volume number. No space separates the volume number and issue number. The issue number isn’t italicized (nor are the parentheses surrounding the issue number).

· The range of pages follows the volume number and issue number.

· The entry ends with a DOI if available. If no DOI is available, end with the URL. Don’t follow the DOI or URL with end punctuation.
