Focus on specific nouns and action verbs
Ten priorities for proficient academic writing
The parts of ten

Two primary parts of speech that need emphasis for successful writing are nouns and verbs. Nouns are the people, places, events, and ideas that are relevant, and verbs are the actions that are completed. Compose your sentences by first identifying the person, event, or idea you are making a statement about, and then following that topic with an action verb. Nouns and verbs are detailed in Chapter 6.

Observe your literary world through nouns and verbs. In addition to reading, observe nouns and verbs on signs and messages. They’re two parts of speech that can make a difference in your writing. Specific nouns plus active verbs equal good writing.
