Reference sources beyond professors’ expectations
Ten priorities for proficient academic writing
The parts of ten

Most college assignments include references to required readings, sources you are expected to engage with. These required sources include formal citations in essay projects such as research papers and informal citations in projects such as essays and response papers. In addition to fulfilling these requirements, include additional primary sources to develop your argument. You can exceed your professor’s expectations by referencing sources such as your textbook, class discussions, interviews with experts, current events, popular books, and life in general. Also consider referencing primary sources such as artifacts, diary entries, period clothing, and photographs. Chapter 10 offers everything you need to know about how to cite, and Chapter 11 explains sources to cite.

Establishing a goal to exceed expectations is not only a good rule for writing, but also a good rule for living. Reach for the moon, and if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.
