Where are they now?
English conversation games and activities for all levels

Skills: Speaking/Writing

Time: 10-15 minutes

Level: Beginner to Advanced

Materials Required: Nothing

This is a post-reading extension activity that can be done orally or in writing. When finishing a novel or story, have students imagine the main character five or ten years in the future.

Where are they? What are they doing? How have the events in the story affected his/her life?

To make this more student-centered, put students into pairs or groups of three to complete this activity.

Teaching Tip:

If your students have difficulty with this, help them with brainstorming. Show them how to make a mind map with items such as: relationship, job, hobbies, home, pet, etc. Talk with your students about how his or her own life has changed in the past five or ten years.

Procedure:

1. After reading a story or novel, discuss how the character changed over the course of the story and why.

2. Have your students discuss in partners or small groups what they think the character’s life will be like five or ten years in the future.
