Flyer time
English conversation games and activities for lower level students

Skills: Speaking/Listening

Time: 10+ minutes

Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Materials Required: Prepared flyers/ads and questions

This activity is used to practice answering questions with a visual aid. While students are unlikely to be asked which bands are playing at X festival, they may need to answer questions about a presentation or report in English which makes this a worthwhile activity. In advance, prepare several event flyers or ads and questions. Prepare some questions that have the answers clearly stated:

✵ What time will ... begin?

✵ Where will this take place?

Also include some questions that require the students to think about the event and use existing knowledge:

✵ Who do you think will be attending this event?

✵ Will attendees need to do anything in advance? (For example, make a reservation or buy tickets)

In class, give the flyer to students and ask them to use it to answer your questions. Explain that not all of the answers are stated explicitly. Students should work together in pairs to do this.

Teaching Tip:

The questions should mostly be content questions with a few purpose questions. The more advanced students are, the more questions you should ask that are not explicitly answered.

Procedure:

1. In advance, prepare several event flyers and questions (see above for examples) for students to answer using the flyers.

2. Let students know that not all questions are explicitly answered on the flyer.

3. Have students use the flyer to answer the questions with a partner.

4. Mention that students are not to read answers word for word but should instead put them in their own words.
