When checking the sound of your writing, look for transition words and phrases connecting sentences and paragraphs. If they are missing, add them. Transitions signal the directional flow of ideas. They clue readers to:

· Arrangement — above, below, beside, in front of, ahead of, after, behind, following, …

· Timing — before, after, at the time of, simultaneously, weeks before, months after, …

· Logical relationships — consequently, however, notwithstanding, since, therefore, thus, …
