Talktation: The new art of speed writing
Apply

Talktation isn’t just a concept — it’s a physical technique that improves with practice. When you apply this technique to your Focus Plan, your writing will literally take off. It’s an incredible rush. Try it. Here’s how, in five easy steps.

1. Plant the idea in your head.

Start with a clear thought of what you’re trying to write. Focus on a specific outcome you want to reach. This will help you stay focused as you get your fingers and brain to sync up. Then:

2. Match your thought to your typing.

Not the other way around! This is the biggest mistake writers make. You can’t just speed up your typing because you want to. Instead, as you begin typing, slow down your thoughts, so you can synchronize the two, and then:

3. Talk your words onto the page.

Think slowly and deliberately, and type each word as you think or speak it. Don’t let your typing get ahead of your thoughts, or vice versa. Think a word, type it. Think a word, type it. Word. Type it. Then, gradually:

4. Increase your thought speed.

Word. Type it. Word, type it. Word type it. Word-type-it. WordTypeIt. Wortypit. Get the idea? As you increase thought speed, don’t go faster than you can type. Let your typing speed gradually increase. Keep them in sync. Then:

5. Practice, and practice some more.

The more you do this, the faster you’ll get. Don’t practice on disconnected writing exercises. Practice on the project you’re writing! Why not kill two birds with one stone?

Talktation is the technique that will turn you into a blazing fast writer. Practice on the short-form writing (like your emails, your letters, your notes), and perfect it on the long-form writing. Take every opportunity you can to practice it, and watch your speed skyrocket.
