Contractions

A contraction is a short form of two words. An apostrophe is used to show where a letter or letters have been left out.

1. I’m: I am

I’m finished with my homework.

2. it’s: it is

It’s going to rain today.

3. you’ve: you have

You’ve been chosen to be the team’s captain.

4. we’ll: we will

We’ll meet you at the restaurant.

5. we’re: we are

We’re looking forward to the start of the baseball season.

6. they’re: they are

They’re in the library studying.

7. won’t: will not

I won’t be able to go to Tina’s party.

8. you’re: you are

You’re the student of the month.

9. doesn’t: does not

If Franco doesn’t hurry, he will be late.

10. he’s: he is

He’s the fastest runner in the fifth grade.

Vocabulary Tip

Be careful not to confuse the following words:

you’re (you are) with the possessive pronoun your

they’re (they are) with the possessive pronoun their and the adverb there

it’s (it is) with the possessive pronoun its

we’re (we are) with the verb were
