Conclusion
Layout and design

To be successful in both page layout and design, you must skillfully blend the multiple components of document design, visual design, and organizational design. In all three areas, the key is to focus on the common goal of creating a document that meets the needs of users.

Remember that all design—whether it’s technical communication or something as ordinary as a paper clip—seeks to simplify the user’s experience. The principles of readability, emphasis, organization, and visual supplementation make it easy to design documents that users understand.

In a technical communication course, you will likely be graded on your individual understanding of the concepts in this textbook as well as the ideas presented by your professor. Beyond the classroom, however, technical communication is a complex field that requires an understanding of page layout and content as well as thoughtful, purposeful design features. Just as words and images must work together in a technical document to create meaning, you need to sharpen your ability to work with tools and in teams to create the best possible product.
